I was incarcerated for 38 months DOC time in FL. When I was released I was told that I had $1,000 of court fines to pay off before I could even THINK about getting my license. I was told during my incarceration that I shouldn't have to pay these fines because I've already did my time. Can you please tell me if this is true, and if not what steps I can take to get these fines reduced?
Answer
I'm afraid that if the fines were turned into liens, then that could be a reason to suspend your license. You can work out a payment plan with the clerk, and they may be able to lift the hold causing the suspension.
Answer
No. Being incarcerated does not eliminate the fines or court costs. Whoever told you that in DOC was incorrect. Fines and costs are to start being paid upon your release from DOC. You may not be sent back to DOC or resentenced, but it can suspend your license.
