Why do you park in a drive but drive in a parkway?

Why do you park in a drive but drive in a parkway?
the same reason why the alarm bell goes "off" instead of "on;" the English language sometimes doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I suppose that's what you get for being the melting pot of every culture. so ha ha ha
