As the term (Modern Art) which some say so arty it no longer resembles reality but a sort of surrealistic improvement on it- one would be tempted to say Vincent Van Gogh comes nearest the category of the First ( you typed fist!) Modern artist in the sense of non-objective impressionism. The French Impressionist Monet did a fine Rheims Cathedral that is only resolved into a building when one looks at it from a distance- at least ten to twenty feet away, anticipating the Parallax problem in modern photography. also titled Cathedral in the Rain- it is fine impressionism.
