An Erds number is a mathematician's measure of "proximity" to the prolific mathematician Paul Erds. Erds is assigned the number 0 and all his coauthors have a number 1. People who have not written papers with Erds, but have written with one of his coauthors have Erds number 2, and so on.


A Bacon number measures an actor's proximity to Kevin Bacon, much like an Erds number. Kevin Bacon has Bacon number 0 and all his costars have Bacon number 1. An actor who has not appeared in a movie with Kevin Bacon, but has starred alongside one of Bacon's costars will have Bacon number 2, and so on.


An Erds-Bacon number is a combination of the two. It is defined to be the sum of a person's Erds number and Bacon number. Since it crosses disciplines between mathematics and acting, most people have infinite (or undefined) Erds-Bacon numbers. Slightly better terminology to saying a person has a "defined Erdos-Bacon number" would be to say that they have a "finite Erdos-Bacon number."
