Why do people text while driving?
People text while driving for a few reasons. Hundreds of excuses, but really just for a few reasons.
Generally, there is a huge social pressure to always be available. This social pressure is so great, that many people put that need ahead of their own and others safety.
Almost anyone will tell you that texting and driving is dangerous. The latest statistic I have read shows that 90% of people will agree. However, it also shows that 54% of people (this is all people, not just teen age drivers) admit to texting while driving.
Sociologists refer to the problem as Pluralistic Ignorance. Basically, the concept is that reality applies to everyone except me. People justify doing things they know are dangerous or bad, because we think we are better than, or different than, other people. "It won't happen to me."
