Is dickens world good?

Is dickens world good?
answer one -It depends on if you like deep literature.

Answer two -Dickens may have answered this himself- "It was the best of times it was the worst of times." [Dickens opening to a Tale of Two Cities]

Dickens world had both good and bad aspects. Dickens stories highlight much of what was bad in the world, especially in England, but glimpses of good things are shown too.

In general things where better than they were before but not nearly as good as they are now.

It is at the beginning of the industrial revolution, lead by England. Utilizing steam power and a greater use of water power allowed relief from some manual labor, creation of more wealth for people overall, improvement of food production, greater wealth creating trade and more benefits. However there were may ills such as; great dislocation of peoples economic situation (steam and water power means less laborers are needed but these folk still need to make a living), initial factory and mine working conditions where almost universally atrocious, rapid urbanization resulted in poor to ghastly housing conditions for many, and the new wealth society had was not by any means equitably distributed.

A quick summation could be, Society in moving to an improved situation, had some very rough times for many.

As Dickens novels focused the ills of society I suppose you can claim his is a bad world. I however would argue that his world is a good, though severely flawed, world, in that on average peoples lives are better, and these are the first few steps to a much better world.
