Can you get a license without drivers ed?

Can you get a license without drivers ed?
I dont know about other states, but in Michigan you can take the drivers test at age 18 without having taken a drivers ed course. I have a friend who did it that way. You still have to pass all the written and practical tests, however. They may have changed that law since i was 16, though.
