Being the lawyer has closed the case but we haven't signed anything to that effect and we don't want to settle yet is it to late being this close to closing the case to get another lawyer and get rid of the one who is only looking out for him self and a quick buck

Your question discloses a complete distrust of your lawyer and his motives. It is never too late to seek a second opinion as long as you have not authorized or signed a release. There are some bad lawyers---and some bad clients. Your distrust may be totally unwarranted. A second opinion may help you both..
